The Future of North Korea following Kim Jong-Il’s death

The past few hours have been filled with media coverage surrounding North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Il’s death. Most of that coverage, from my perspective, has focused on how world relations will be affected. I am not concerned with any of that at this point and time.

I am much more worried about the citizens of North Korea. There is no doubt they live in terrible conditions. After watching a few documentaries, one would learn about the frequent power outages, lack of food and lack of medical care.

Il’s son is only 28. To take control of a communist nation at that age is very tough. I hope the United States will take a stance that includes passive aggressive humanitarianism.

I believe we should make a statement that offers humanitarian help. In fact, all important world powers should join in.

A disorganized government in North Korea could create a terrible refugee situation — much worse than what the U.S. experiences. Refugees will flee to China and perhaps even try to cross the demilitarized zone into South Korea. Life is better for them in every direction. If they stay where they are, they might die. If they make it to another country, they might die. However, there is a much better life waiting for them — if they can find it.

Whatever happens, the International Red Cross and World Health Organization need to take this opportunity to enter North Korea and aid the citizens. They need it more than any citizen in the “western” world. Poverty in North Korea is significantly worse than any poverty an American will ever experience.

President Obama proposes to raise taxes on wealthy

If your in the mood for some good reading click here and read an article by the Associated press about…. well, just check the title.

If not, I’ll explain it to you.

Basically, if the government doesn’t raise the debt limit or find a compromise, we are going to be chillin’ just like our ancestors were during the great depression in the 1930’s. In other words the world is going to go into depression because just about everyone has some kind of stock in the U.S. economy, especially China.

Anyway, Obama didn’t introduce a bill that said the wealthy are going to have to pay x number more. He did say that “they can afford to pay more.” This is an important step because — if you know anything about the U.S. economy — the wealthy pay a significantly smaller percentage of their income in taxes than the middle class do.

Although I don’t like the U.S. becoming deeper in debt, It has to be done. More importantly, there needs to be a plan to reduce the debt. The government cannot keep operating the way it does if it ever wants to stop worrying about deficit spending.
